  • New Human Rights Project Launched in Tajikistan with Support from UNDEF

On 1 September 2026, Public Organisation “The World of Law” launched the project “Advancing Human Rights, Justice and Accountability through Dialogue in the Republic of Tajikistan.” The project is implemented with the support of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) and will run until 31 May 2028. The project aims to contribute to stronger protection of human rights, improved access to justice, and greater accountability in Tajikistan by promoting constructive cooperation between civil society and state institutions.

A key component of the project will be strengthening dialogue between civil society organisations and public authorities on priority human rights issues. Regular platforms for discussion and cooperation will provide opportunities to review existing challenges, identify areas for improvement, and develop practical recommendations. The project will also support civil society organisations and human rights defenders in strengthening their capacity for human rights monitoring, evidence-based advocacy, institutional engagement, and sustainable organisational development.

Particular attention will be given to the prevention of torture and ill-treatment and to strengthening rights-based approaches within the penitentiary system. The project will support capacity-building for relevant professionals, including training on crisis prevention and management, protection of persons deprived of liberty, and the application of international human rights standards.

Another important area of work will focus on strengthening mechanisms for receiving and handling complaints of human rights violations. This will include support to the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman), capacity-building for relevant staff, development of accessible complaint mechanisms, and public awareness activities to ensure that people are better informed about available avenues for protecting their rights.

The project will also provide mentoring and psychological support to civil society representatives and human rights defenders, helping to strengthen their professional resilience and long-term engagement in the promotion and protection of human rights. Through dialogue, capacity-building, monitoring and institutional cooperation, the project seeks to contribute to more effective and sustainable mechanisms
for the protection of human rights and access to justice in Tajikistan.
